The Funeral of Seyyed Mustafa Tajzadeh’s Brother: A Reflection of Political Legacy and Mourning

Historical Context: Political Repression in Iran

The Evolution of Political Repression

Iran’s political repression has evolved since the 20th century. Under the Shah, political dissent was met with censorship, imprisonment, and exile. The Islamic Revolution initially promised liberation and justice, but the subsequent establishment of the Islamic Republic saw widespread suppression of opposition voices, especially after the 1979 revolution.

The 1980s were marked by mass executions of political prisoners, notably during the height of the Iran-Iraq War. The 1990s and 2000s saw a resurgence of reformist movements, leading to periods of relative liberalization, such as during President Khatami’s tenure, followed by crackdowns under more conservative and hardline factions.
