What Does a Strange Taste in Your Mouth Mean?
Not everyone with reflux experiences heartburn. Some people mainly notice regurgitation, throat symptoms, or an unpleasant taste.
Why Does Acid Reflux Cause a Sour Taste at Night?
When a person lies down, gravity provides less assistance in keeping stomach contents in the stomach. Reflux may therefore become more noticeable after going to bed, especially following a large or late meal.
A sour taste in the morning can be associated with nighttime reflux, but it is not specific to this condition.
Dry mouth, mouth breathing, postnasal drip, and oral health problems can also produce an unpleasant morning taste.
To reduce possible reflux symptoms, consider eating smaller meals, avoiding food for approximately three hours before lying down, and identifying personal food triggers.
If symptoms occur at night, elevating the head of the bed with a suitable wedge or bed elevation may help some people. Simply adding multiple soft pillows may not provide the same effect.
Persistent reflux, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent vomiting should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Sleeping With Your Mouth Open
Mouth breathing during sleep can reduce moisture in the mouth and contribute to a sour, stale, or unpleasant taste upon waking.
Possible reasons include nasal congestion, allergies, structural nasal problems, and habitual mouth breathing.
Other symptoms may include a dry throat, cracked lips, morning bad breath, or a feeling of thirst when waking.
Drinking water regularly, maintaining good oral hygiene, and addressing nasal congestion where appropriate may help.
However, persistent mouth breathing accompanied by loud snoring, gasping during sleep, or significant daytime sleepiness deserves further evaluation.
