Perseid Meteor Shower in 2026: Camping, Stargazing and Night-Sky Tourism in Semnan Province
The Perseids and Shooting Stars
The phrase “shooting star” is commonly used to describe a meteor.
Despite the name, a shooting star is not a star moving across the sky.
It is generally a small piece of rocky or dusty material entering Earth’s atmosphere.
The friction and compression of the atmosphere produce a glowing trail.
During a meteor shower, Earth passes through a stream of particles associated with a comet or asteroid.
Because the particles enter the atmosphere from similar directions, the meteors appear to originate from a particular region of the sky.
For the Perseids, this apparent point is associated with the constellation Perseus.
This point is called the radiant.
