The Green Laser Pointer Used by the Astronomer
One of the most recognizable elements in the photographs from Semnan is the green laser pointer used by an amateur astronomer.
Astronomy laser pointers are commonly used by experienced observers to indicate stars and constellations.
A person can point toward a particular region of the sky and explain:
“This is the constellation Perseus.”
Or:
“That bright object is a planet.”
The beam provides a visual connection between the observer on the ground and the object being discussed.
However, astronomy lasers must be used responsibly.
They should never be directed toward aircraft, vehicles or people.
A laser pointed into the sky can create serious safety risks if it intersects an aircraft.
