Perseid Meteor Shower in 2026: Camping, Stargazing and Night-Sky Tourism in Semnan Province
Why a Telescope Is Not Necessary for a Meteor Shower
The photographs from Semnan show an amateur astronomer using a telescope, but this does not mean a telescope is required to watch the Perseids.
Meteor showers are different from observations of planets or distant galaxies.
A telescope magnifies a small portion of the sky.
A meteor may appear anywhere.
For this reason, the ideal meteor-shower setup is often simply:
Your eyes + a dark sky + patience.
However, a telescope can make the evening much more educational.
While waiting for meteors, participants can use telescopes to observe the Moon, planets, star clusters and other astronomical objects.
