A Bit of Light: Sadaf Asgari’s New Venice Film
A Bit of Light, internationally titled Kami nour, is directed by Ali Asgari and written by Ali Asgari and Shadmehr Rastin.
The film has been selected for the Venezia 83 Competition, where it competes for the prestigious Golden Lion. The official festival listing identifies the film as an 87-minute Persian-language production from Iran, Switzerland, Italy, Canada and Türkiye.
The principal cast includes Misagh Zareh, Sadaf Asgari, Forouzan Jamshidnejad, Ramtin Daghigh and Mina Rahimzadeh.
The cinematography is by Iman Tahsin, with editing also credited to Iman Tahsin. Atena Daremi handled costume design, Navid Divan composed the music, and Sara Nasrabadi and Vahid Moghadasi worked on sound.
The film received its official Competition presentation at Sala Grande on September 11, following earlier press and industry screenings during the festival.
What Is A Bit of Light About?
A Bit of Light tells the story of an Iranian doctor whose life changes dramatically after an arrest causes him to lose his medical license.
Faced with despair and a profound sense of helplessness, the doctor decides that he wants to end his life. Before taking that final step, however, he spends one last day with his mother and siblings.
The story unfolds through ordinary interactions, family relationships and seemingly small moments.
That contrast between an extraordinary personal crisis and the routines of everyday life is central to the film’s emotional concept.
The Venice film description presents the story against a broader background of economic crisis, political uncertainty and the threat of war. The film therefore operates simultaneously as an intimate family drama and as a portrait of a society experiencing profound uncertainty.
Reuters likewise described the film as a story of despair and resilience in contemporary Iran, noting that Ali Asgari and lead actor Misagh Zareh discussed the atmosphere of helplessness produced by political repression and social pressure.
This gives Sadaf Asgari’s participation in the film particular importance. Her performance belongs to a story in which the private and political dimensions of life are closely intertwined.
