The relationship between Europe and Iran has long been complicated.
European governments have simultaneously expressed concern about human rights, Iran’s nuclear program, regional security and political repression while maintaining economic and diplomatic relationships with Tehran.
This has produced a persistent debate within the Iranian diaspora.
Some Iranian opposition activists argue that European governments have been too willing to compromise with Tehran for economic or geopolitical reasons.
Others argue that diplomatic engagement remains necessary to prevent escalation and protect European security interests.
The disagreement became especially visible after the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests.
Iranian activists repeatedly called on European governments to impose stronger sanctions on officials responsible for repression.
They also called for international recognition of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization and for stronger action against individuals accused of human-rights violations.
The debate continues in 2026.
