This diaspora network has become an important part of the international visibility of Iranian opposition movements.

When protests inside Iran are suppressed or restricted by internet shutdowns and security measures, demonstrations abroad can provide international media visibility.

Iranian Political Demonstrations in Germany

Germany has been one of the most important locations for Iranian political activism in Europe.

Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf have hosted Iranian political and cultural events.

The German-Iranian community is diverse, including political refugees, students, professionals, business owners, artists and families who have lived in Germany for generations.

Political divisions within the Iranian diaspora also exist.

Some groups support republican opposition movements.

Some support monarchism.

Some support ethnic or regional political movements.

Some prioritize human rights over questions of political structure.

Others are focused on economic relations between Europe and Iran.

The September demonstrations should therefore be understood as part of a broader diaspora political environment rather than as a single unified movement.
