Breaking Barriers: Paria Shafazadeh’s Journey in the Male-Dominated Turning and Welding Workshop

The Impact of Economic and Social Challenges on Women in Trades

Paria’s story takes place against a backdrop of significant economic and social challenges faced by many in Iran. The industrial sector, specifically machining and welding, traditionally has been perceived as a male-dominated domain, often deterring women from pursuing careers in these fields. Despite the obstacles, the demand for skilled labor in machining and welding presents an opportunity for both men and women.

Understanding the Economic Landscape

Iran’s economy, affected by fluctuating markets and sanctions, has created a landscape where job security can be precarious. With her husband’s past struggles leading to bankruptcy, Paria recognized that diversifying skills and maintaining resilience were essential for survival. “We realized that to thrive, we had to adapt our business model and broadening our skill sets was crucial,” she explains.

For many women, the decision to enter trades is not merely about pursuing a passion; it’s also about securing financial independence. Paria acknowledges the broader implications of her work, stating, “When women succeed in trades, it not only empowers them but also supports their families and communities.”
