Breaking Barriers: Paria Shafazadeh’s Journey in the Male-Dominated Turning and Welding Workshop
Cultivating a Supportive Environment
Despite the challenges, the workshop environment has evolved since Paria joined her husband. The couple has worked together to create a more inclusive atmosphere for women. Paria shares, “We’ve made it a point to encourage open dialogue and respect in the workshop. When women see that they are supported, they are more likely to step into roles that empower them.”
Paria has also found allies among her male coworkers, who have come to appreciate her expertise and work ethic. “Initially, it was challenging, but my colleagues have seen the value I bring to the table. Over time, we’ve built mutual respect,” she notes.
The Role of Education and Training
In her quest to foster female participation in the trades, Paria emphasizes the importance of education and training. She believes that structured education can play a pivotal role in transitioning women into trades.
- Technical Training Programs: These programs should focus on hands-on experience, blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications. “Courses that incorporate real-world scenarios can help bridge the gap for aspiring women in trades,” she advises.
- Mentorship Opportunities: Establishing mentorship programs where experienced female machinists guide newcomers can cultivate a supportive community. “Guidance from those who have walked the path can significantly increase confidence and skills,” Paria adds.
- Collaborations with Educational Institutions: Partnering with vocational schools to introduce girls to machining and welding at a young age can help dismantle stereotypes before they form. “We need to inspire the next generation early on,” Paria asserts.
