Mojtaba Khamenei Becomes Supreme Leader: Middle East Tensions Rise Amid Conflict and Global Oil Price Surge

The Leadership Transition in Iran

The Role of the Supreme Leader

In Iran’s political system, the Supreme Leader holds the highest authority. The position oversees the military, judiciary, and many aspects of national policy.

The office was established after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, which transformed Iran from a monarchy into an Islamic republic.

Since then, Iran has had only two Supreme Leaders:

  1. Ruhollah Khomeini (1979–1989)

  2. Ali Khamenei (1989–2026)

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei represents the third leadership era in the Islamic Republic’s history.
