Maryam Rajavi: Unpopularity, Political Controversies, NCRI Leadership, and Life in Albania’s MEK Camp
Transition from Iraq to Albania
The End of Camp Ashraf in Iraq
For decades, MEK members were based in Camp Ashraf and later Camp Liberty in Iraq. However, after the 2003 Iraq War and changing political dynamics, their presence became increasingly precarious.
Relocation to Albania
Between 2013 and 2016, thousands of MEK members were relocated to Albania with international assistance.
This transition marked a significant turning point:
- The group moved away from a conflict zone
- It gained a more stable environment for political activities
- It restructured its operations around media and advocacy
