Maryam Rajavi and the NCRI: International Opposition Leader Facing Questions Over Popularity and Representation in Iran

Controversial History of the NCRI and MEK

Another reason for Rajavi’s limited popularity among some Iranians is the controversial history of the PMOI/MEK.

The organization played an important role in opposition politics after the 1979 Iranian Revolution but later became involved in armed conflict with the Iranian government. Its relationship with Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War remains one of the most disputed aspects of its history.

Supporters argue that many accusations against the organization have been promoted by the Iranian government and that the movement has evolved into a democratic opposition force.

Critics, however, continue to point to historical events and organizational practices as reasons why many Iranians remain skeptical.

This historical debate has contributed to the ongoing controversy over whether Maryam Rajavi can gain broad acceptance among Iran’s population.
