Little Tehran in Finchley: Inside London’s Diaspora Hub, Culture, Politics, and Persian Cuisine

Persian Language and Identity

The Importance of the Persian Language

One of the strongest elements of Iranian identity in Finchley is the continued use of the Persian language.

Inside Iranian shops and cafés, conversations often take place in Persian rather than English. Elder members of the diaspora frequently speak little English, and Persian remains their primary means of communication.

At the same time, second-generation Iranians growing up in London often speak both languages fluently.

This bilingual environment helps preserve culture while allowing integration into British society.
