“Janfada” Drill: Armed Volunteers, Basij Mobilization and the Unusual Appearance of Female Motorcyclists in Tehran

From civilian registration to military organization

One of the most important developments surrounding Janfada-ye Iran is the reported movement from registration to structured organization.

Iranian officials have described a process in which people first declare their willingness to participate and subsequently identify areas where they could contribute.

According to Press TV, areas included support for the war effort, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and defense.

Iran Press similarly reported that the initiative was designed to mobilize citizens for defense, emergency response, social services and other national activities.

The distinction matters.

A person registering for an emergency-response role is not necessarily equivalent to a person being placed in a combat battalion.

The campaign appears to encompass both categories.

At the September 18 event, however, the combat-oriented component became highly visible.
