Gil-Mali Ritual: The Ancient Mud-Covering Tradition During Ashura Mourning for Karbala Martyrs
The Battle of Karbala: The Historical Event Behind Ashura
To understand why Ashura traditions are so powerful, it is important to understand the historical background of Karbala.
The Battle of Karbala took place in 680 CE during a period of political conflict in the early Islamic world. Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatimah and son-in-law Ali, refused to recognize Yazid’s leadership, believing that his rule represented injustice and corruption.
Imam Hussein traveled with his family members and supporters toward Kufa after receiving messages of support from people there. However, his group was intercepted near Karbala by forces loyal to Yazid.
The small group of Imam Hussein’s followers faced severe hardship. They were deprived of access to water and eventually attacked.
On the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, Imam Hussein and his companions were killed.
The event became one of the most important symbols in Shia Islam, representing sacrifice, courage, and resistance against oppression.
