Understanding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, widely known as the IRGC, is one of the most powerful military and political institutions in Iran. Established after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the organization was created to defend the Islamic Republic and preserve the revolutionary system.

Unlike the regular Iranian army, known as the Artesh, the IRGC has responsibilities that extend beyond conventional military operations. Over the years, the Revolutionary Guard has evolved into a complex institution with influence over defense, intelligence, politics, cyber operations, strategic infrastructure, aerospace development, naval operations, and regional security strategy.

The IRGC Ground Forces focus on land operations, urban warfare, border defense, anti-insurgency activities, and rapid deployment missions. The Navy operates mainly in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, areas that are critical for global energy transportation.

The Basij Resistance Force acts as a volunteer paramilitary organization involved in internal security and mobilization efforts. Meanwhile, the Quds Force is responsible for overseas strategic operations and regional influence missions.

The Revolutionary Guard has become central to Iran’s military doctrine, especially as the country faces sanctions, international pressure, cyber threats, and regional rivalries.
