Esmail Qaani: Powerful Quds Force Commander Shaping Iran’s Military Strategy in 2024

Early Life and Military Background

Esmail Qaani was born in the city of Mashhad, Iran, in 1957. Growing up against the backdrop of political upheaval and the Islamic Revolution, Qaani’s formative years were marked by a strong sense of nationalism and a desire to serve his country. He joined the IRGC shortly after its establishment in 1979, quickly becoming involved in military operations during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). This conflict was pivotal in shaping Qaani’s military philosophy and tactics, as he learned to navigate the complexities of war, guerrilla tactics, and unconventional warfare.

During the war, Qaani rose through the ranks, serving in various capacities. His leadership during key operations established him as a formidable strategist and earned him respect within the IRGC. The skills he honed in this tumultuous period would later serve him well as he took on more significant roles, culminating in his appointment as the commander of the Quds Force.
