Free Market Dollar Rate Hits Record High: Dollar Reaches 200,000 Toman as Economic Pressure Deepens in 2026
Iran’s Currency Crisis and Inflation
The collapse of the rial and toman is closely connected to Iran’s inflation problem.
Currency depreciation does not automatically mean that every price increases by the same percentage. However, in an economy heavily exposed to imported goods and imported production inputs, a weaker currency can create substantial inflationary pressure.
Iranian consumers have already experienced years of price increases.
When the exchange rate moves sharply, businesses face a difficult choice.
They can absorb higher costs and accept lower profit margins.
They can reduce the quantity or quality of goods.
Or they can raise prices.
Many businesses eventually have little choice but to pass at least some of their increased costs to consumers.
This is particularly important for products with significant imported content.
