14 Key Updates on Cecilia Sala’s Arrest in Iran – What We Know So Far
Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old Italian journalist known for her work with Il Foglio and Chora Media, has been detained by Iranian police while reporting in Tehran. The Italian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that she was arrested on 19 December 2024, with ongoing efforts to clarify her legal situation and verify the conditions of her detention.
Circumstances of Detention
According to reports, Sala arrived in Iran on 12 December with a valid journalistic visa and was scheduled to return on 20 December. The ministry indicated that she has had limited contact with her family, having made two phone calls since her detention. Italian Ambassador to Iran Paola Amadei visited Sala in Evin Prison, where she is currently being held. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that she is in good health, but expressed grave concern for her well-being amid alarming reports about the conditions in the facility.
Evin Prison is notorious for housing a range of political prisoners and foreign nationals, including dual nationals, with reports from human rights organizations alleging mistreatment and abuse of detainees. The high-profile cases of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori, among others, have drawn international attention to the prison’s conditions, emphasizing the risks faced by individuals detained there.
