Brad Pitt Opens Up About Sobriety, Mental Health, Family Loss and the Hardest Period of His Life

Introduction

Brad Pitt is opening up about some of the most difficult and personal chapters of his life. In a revealing 2026 interview with Esquire, the Oscar-winning actor discussed sobriety, alcohol, mental health, family struggles, grief following the death of his mother, and a period in which he said he experienced suicidal thoughts.

The interview offers a rare look at the person behind one of Hollywood’s most recognizable careers. Pitt, who has spent decades at the center of the entertainment industry, acknowledged that fame, professional success and financial security do not necessarily protect someone from emotional pain.

Speaking candidly about his experiences, the actor reflected on addiction, recovery, loss and the challenge of moving forward when life becomes overwhelming.

Pitt’s comments have attracted significant attention because he has previously spoken about his relationship with alcohol and his decision to attend Alcoholics Anonymous. He has also credited fellow actor Bradley Cooper with helping him during his journey toward sobriety.

Now, however, Pitt says his relationship with alcohol has changed. After maintaining sobriety for seven years, he said he eventually began drinking again, although he emphasized that he now approaches alcohol very differently and cannot consume large quantities.

His comments about mental health were even more personal. Pitt revealed that he experienced one particularly dark period in his life when he felt that he could not see a way forward.

“I’ve never been suicidal except for one little period,” Pitt told Esquire, describing the experience as deeply oppressive.

The actor also reflected on the death of his mother, who died in August 2025, and the broader family difficulties that contributed to what he described as one of the lowest points of his life.

Despite his struggles, Pitt continues to work. In September 2026, he is scheduled to appear in Heart of the Beast, a survival action film in which he plays Special Forces officer James Belmont.

The contrast between Pitt’s public image and his private experiences is at the heart of his latest interview. He may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but his message is remarkably human: success does not make life easy.

As Pitt himself put it, “This s— ain’t easy.”
