Ali Khamenei: Leadership of the Islamic Republic (1979-1989) and the Role of the Supreme Defense Council
Iran’s Military Modernization
Under Khamenei’s guidance, Iran’s military underwent significant modernization efforts. The country invested heavily in upgrading its air force, navy, and ground forces. Iran’s military modernization program focused on developing capabilities to counter potential threats from neighboring countries, particularly Iraq, and to project power in the region.
The Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988)
Khamenei played a crucial role in Iran’s military strategy during the Iran-Iraq War. He served as the Chairman of the Supreme Defense Council, which oversaw the country’s military efforts. Khamenei’s experience in the Pasdaran and his close relationship with Ayatollah Khomeini enabled him to provide strategic guidance to the military.
Iran’s Nuclear Program
In the 1980s, Iran began to develop its nuclear program, with Khamenei’s support. The program aimed to develop a nuclear deterrent to counter potential threats from regional powers, particularly Israel. Khamenei’s views on the nuclear program were shaped by his concerns about Israel’s military capabilities and the need for Iran to develop a credible deterrent.
The Supreme Leader
In 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini passed away, and Khamenei was appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. As the Supreme Leader, Khamenei became the highest authority in the country, responsible for setting the country’s overall direction and ensuring the implementation of Islamic law in Iran.
