World Leaders Gather for United Nations General Assembly as President Masoud Pezeshkian Delivers Wartime Address
World leaders gathered in New York on September 23 for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with the wars involving Iran, Israel, Ukraine and Gaza, artificial intelligence, international security and the future of diplomacy dominating attention at the United Nations.
Among the most closely watched speakers was Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who addressed the UN General Assembly as tensions between Iran and the United States remained at the center of international diplomacy. Pezeshkian’s appearance came one day after U.S. President Donald Trump used his own UN speech to warn Iran that the United States could take further military action if a peace agreement was not reached. Reuters reported that Pezeshkian responded by saying Iran would not surrender while simultaneously emphasizing diplomacy as a possible route toward ending the conflict.
Pezeshkian’s appearance at the United Nations was also notable because he held up photographs of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and children killed during the conflict. The Iranian president used the images while presenting Iran’s account of the war and arguing that Iranian civilians had been victims of attacks.
The appearance of Pezeshkian, Iran’s president, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at UN Headquarters came at a particularly consequential moment for relations between Tehran and Washington. Iranian and American representatives were also communicating through intermediaries in New York, with Reuters reporting that the contacts represented the first such shuttle discussions between the two sides in months.
Masoud Pezeshkian Arrives at the United Nations
Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New York to represent Iran at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, joining presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers and senior officials from around the world.
Photographs from September 23 show Pezeshkian arriving at the United Nations Headquarters before delivering his address to the General Assembly. Images also show Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, arriving for the UN meetings.
The Iranian delegation’s presence in New York had itself been the subject of international attention. The United States announced earlier in September that it would allow a core Iranian delegation, including Pezeshkian and Araghchi, to attend the General Assembly despite the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran. Reuters reported that the delegation faced restrictions on movement in New York under the arrangements for the visit.
The decision allowed Iran’s leadership to present its position directly from the floor of the United Nations at a time when the international community was closely watching developments in the Middle East.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is taking place during a period of major international instability. The United Nations has identified the high-level week as an opportunity for governments to address conflicts, climate change, technological transformation, development, international cooperation and other global challenges.
