Funeral in Tehran for Ali Larijani and Sailors Killed in U.S.-Israel Attack

Introduction

On March 18, 2026, thousands of mourners filled Enghelab Square in central Tehran to attend one of the most significant state funerals in recent Iranian history. The ceremony honored senior Iranian official Ali Larijani, Basij commander Gholam Reza Soleimani, and 84 sailors from the Iranian Navy frigate IRIS Dena.

The funeral comes amid escalating tensions and ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, following a series of military strikes that have dramatically reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.

Large crowds dressed in black carried portraits, waved flags, and chanted slogans as coffins draped in the Iranian flag were transported through the capital. The atmosphere was charged with grief, anger, and national solidarity.
