What Women Used Before Period Pads Existed

In the 19th century, women in European and North American societies were creating sanitary tools themselves from rags. This led to the term “on the rag”, which was slang for menstruation. Women used flannel or woven fabric to make menstrual clothes, which weren’t a sterile solution.
