His father, Dick Carlson, was a notable media executive and journalist, serving as the president of Voice of America and later as the director of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. His mother, Lisa McNair, was an artist who left the family when Tucker was young.

After his parents’ separation, Tucker moved with his father and younger brother to California.
