Breaking Barriers: Paria Shafazadeh’s Journey in the Male-Dominated Turning and Welding Workshop

Introduction

In a world where gender roles often dictate career paths, Paria Shafazadeh stands out as a beacon of determination and resilience. Located on the outskirts of Tehran, her workplace—a turning and welding workshop—has been predominantly male-dominated. However, Paria has not only made her mark in this challenging environment but has also carved out a successful career as a CNC machine operator and workshop partner, showcasing the evolving landscape of gender roles in Iran’s industrial sector.

The Genesis of a Passionate Pursuit

Paria’s journey into the world of machining began not by random chance but from a foundation built over ten years. “My husband had been involved in lathe work for a decade. My background in architecture allowed me to assist him in design roles, even using design software to aid him outside the workshop. Nevertheless, my heart yearned for a more hands-on approach,” she explains. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for her leap into the industrial sector.

A Turning Point: From Support to Partnership

The turning point in Paria’s career came four years ago when her husband faced bankruptcy due to economic challenges. “I asked him to let me become his partner. It was a difficult decision, but I knew I could help,” Paria recalls. Her husband agreed, encouraging her aspiration to immerse herself in the industrial landscape.

Embarking on her journey as a CNC machine operator was not without its challenges. Initially, Paria faced skepticism from male counterparts. Yet, she remained resolute, believing that her skill set and determination could contribute to the workshop.
