Hassan Rouhani’s 1th Norouz Meeting: Navigating Challenges and Pursuing Diplomacy
Hassan faced immense challenges both at home and globally throughout his tenure. Domestically, he was stuck between entrenched political factions, a stagnant economy, and social unrest as he also dealt with complex power relationships in Iran’s theocratic system. Internationally, Rouhani attempted to repair Iran’s frosty relations with western countries, especially the United States, while at the same time grappling with regional antagonism as well as geopolitical rivalries. One of Rouhani’s best-known achievements was negotiating for and implementing a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), popularly known as an Iranian nuclear deal. The JCPOA aims at curbing Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief signed in 2015 by Iran and P5+1 countries (the U.S., U.K., France, Russia, China, and Germany), thus preventing a possible military confrontation and creating a more peaceful environment within the region.
