Golshifteh Farahani’s Stunning Style at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival
Golshifteh Farahani: A Global Star and a Voice for Change
Born in Tehran, Iran, Golshifteh Farahani has been an influential figure in the film industry, not just because of her impressive filmography but also due to her activism and bold choices that defy traditional boundaries. Her career began at a young age, and she quickly gained recognition for her talent. Farahani made her film debut at 14 in Dariush Mehrjui’s The Pear Tree, which earned her the Crystal Roc for Best Actress at the 16th Fajr International Film Festival. This early success paved the way for her to become a leading figure in the Iranian cinema scene.
However, Farahani’s international breakthrough came with her role in Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. This was not without controversy. Her appearance in the film, especially without wearing a hijab, angered the Iranian authorities, and she has since lived in exile in France, unable to return to her home country.
Farahani’s exile has not dimmed her star. She has gone on to perform in several critically acclaimed films, including the award-winning About Elly, which won Best Picture at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival and a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2016, she took on the iconic role of Anna Karenina on stage in Paris, receiving widespread praise for her portrayal.
