As a dramatic form, the monologue can be unforgiving. Even with a cast full of famous faces, slick production design, and a succession of high-concept science-fiction premises, Solos, a pandemic-era anthology experiment in the vein of HBO’s more grounded Coastal Elites, struggles to hold your attention. Stars like Anne Hathaway, Anthony Mackie, Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba, and Constance Wu do their best with overwritten globs of text, most courtesy of creator David Weill (Amazon’s revenge drama Hunters), that demand they sell every teary-eyed confession, awkward pop culture gag, and carefully telegraphed narrative reversal.
