Ebrahim Raisi’s 40th Day Ceremony: A Powerful Reflection on His Legacy
The Helicopter Crash and Immediate Aftermath
On 19 May 2024, Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials, died in a helicopter crash near Uzi village in East Azerbaijan province. This tragic event shocked the nation, leading to immediate declarations of mourning and a series of high-profile funeral ceremonies.
Funeral Ceremonies and International Reactions
The funerals began on 21 May in Tabriz, where tens of thousands gathered. The remains were then taken to Tehran and Qom before a major ceremony at Tehran University on 22 May, attended by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, high-ranking officials, and international dignitaries, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Raisi’s remains were ultimately buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on 23 May.
Despite the significant turnout, the attendance at Raisi’s funeral was notably lower compared to the massive crowds for General Qassem Soleimani in 2020. Nonetheless, the ceremonies were marked by profound grief and political symbolism.
