Ali Ashraf: The Iranian Michael Scofield – A Journey through Crime and Escape

Notorious Escape from Rajai Shahr Prison

The Tunnel Escape Plan

What defines Ali Ashraf’s notorious reputation is his remarkable escape from Rajai Shahr Prison in 2005. In a feat that would earn him the nickname “Iranian Michael Scofield,” Ali led a team of prisoners in a three-year-long excavation project. Using rudimentary tools like spoons, they dug a tunnel that would ultimately provide them an escape route from the confines of one of Iran’s most secure prisons.

Extreme Measures for Escape

During this period, Ali and his accomplices had to restrict their diet and adapt physically to navigate the narrow tunnel they had constructed. Their escape plan culminated in June 2005 when they finally emerged through a sewage canal. By sewing and donning plastic clothes, they cleverly masked their identities, discarded their disguises post-escape, and dispersed into society wearing normal clothing.

Life After Escape

Returning to Crime

Post-escape, Ali returned to criminal activities, adopting a fake identity as an asphalt worker. Yet his freedom was short-lived. An encounter with an Afghan immigrant, who recognized him from prior prison days, led to his identification and eventual capture.
