Remembering Parviz Davoodi: A Controversial Legacy in Politics and Economics

Introduction

On April 18, 2024, Parviz Davoodi, a famous Iranian conservative politician and former First Vice President, died at age 72. His funeral took place in Tehran’s Noor Mosque and was attended by politicians from different arenas, hence showing the great impact he had on Iranian politics and education.
A Historical Career in Public Service

Davoodi’s birthplace is the capital of Iran, which is Tehran. He was born on February 5th, 1952, after which he went to pursue higher education far away from his motherland, for instance, obtaining a doctorate degree in economics from Iowa State University in 1981. His educational qualifications ushered him into top government positions, including his stint as an economic deputy minister in Rafsanjani’s administration as well as being first vice president during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime, which lasted five years, beginning from 2005 up to 2009.

Besides the other responsibilities mentioned above, Davoodi served as a member of the Expediency Discernment Council and also retained a teaching position at Shahid Beheshti University, where he tutored many students concerning economic studies.
