10 Proven Psychological Techniques to Win Any Debate

5) Seek Mutual Understanding

It’s more about your mindset. If your only goal is to win at all costs, you may end up winning the argument, but in the long run, you will damage your relationship with the other party. Instead, enter every discussion with the goal of understanding the other person’s point of view and understanding. Healthy discussion can be an opportunity to learn, grow, and reach mutual understanding.

6) Do Not Use Absolute Expressions

When you’re in the heat of an argument, it’s easy to use absolutes like “always” and “never.” But saying these phrases can make the other party defensive and escalate the argument instead of solving it. Avoiding absolutes helps keep the discussion productive and focused on finding a solution.
