Perseid Meteor Shower in 2026: Camping, Stargazing and Night-Sky Tourism in Semnan Province

What Is the Perseid Meteor Shower?

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best-known annual meteor showers visible from Earth.

Every year, Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

As tiny particles from the comet enter Earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds, they heat up and produce bright streaks of light.

These streaks are commonly called shooting stars, although they are not actually stars.

The Perseids are particularly popular with amateur astronomers because the shower can produce numerous meteors and is associated with the warm northern-hemisphere summer season.

This makes it especially suitable for outdoor observation.

People do not need sophisticated astronomical equipment to see the Perseids.

In fact, the human eye is often the best instrument for watching a meteor shower because meteors can appear across a large area of the sky.

A telescope has a very narrow field of view and is therefore not normally necessary for meteor-shower observation.

However, telescopes, binoculars, star charts and laser pointers can be useful for learning about constellations and other celestial objects while waiting for meteors to appear.
