Political Protests 2026: Memorials, Anti-Government Movements, and the Future of Political Landscape

Background of Iran’s Political Landscape

Iran’s political system is a unique hybrid of theocratic and democratic elements. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran has been governed by a Supreme Leader with vast powers, alongside a President elected through popular vote. However, the Guardian Council, an influential body comprising clerics and jurists, has veto power over elections and legislation, limiting genuine political pluralism.

Iran’s political climate has been characterized by tension between reformist factions seeking democratization and progress, and conservative hardliners committed to maintaining theocratic rule. Over the decades, Iran has experienced multiple waves of protests, including the 2009 Green Movement, 2017-2018 protests over economic issues, and the latest wave beginning in 2023, driven by social grievances and economic sanctions.
