Mohsen Makhmalbaf: The Filmmaker’s Journey from Ideological Cinema to Global Recognition

Controversies and Political Stances: From Iran to Israel

Makhmalbaf’s political activism often sparked controversy. His public support for the Green Movement and his outspoken criticism of Iran’s government have led to accusations of treason from Iranian authorities. His open letter to U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012, apologizing on behalf of Iran, drew sharp reactions.

A particularly contentious episode was his participation in the Jerusalem Film Festival in 2013, where he attended with his documentary Baghban and received an award. His statement to Israeli audiences, calling for support of democratic forces in Iran, provoked widespread anger domestically. This action underscored his unwavering commitment to human rights and freedom of expression, despite political risks.

Emigration and Political Activism Post-2000

In 2005, Makhmalbaf left Iran, settling in France. His exile allowed him to speak more freely against Iran’s political regime and advocate for democracy and human rights. His support for protests like the 2009 Green Movement and his critical stance on government policies highlighted his ongoing engagement with Iran’s political struggles.

His move abroad also enabled him to collaborate on international projects and continue producing socially conscious films that challenge authoritarian regimes and promote social justice.
