Maryam Rajavi’s Speech at the FOFI Session in Brussels
Who Is Maryam Rajavi? An Overview of Her Life and Political Career
Early Life and Education
Maryam Rajavi was born on December 4, 1953, in Tehran, Iran, into a middle-class family with roots tracing back to the Qajar dynasty. She graduated from Sharif University of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy, which laid the foundation for her disciplined and strategic approach to activism.
Political Beginnings and Anti-Shah Activism
Her political activism started at a young age, especially after her sister Narges was murdered by SAVAK, the Shah’s secret police. This tragedy galvanized her resolve to oppose the authoritarian regime. As a student, Rajavi became involved in the anti-Shah student movement, organizing protests and advocating for democratic reforms.
Transition to the Iranian Opposition and the MEK
Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Maryam Rajavi joined the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), a revolutionary organization advocating for the overthrow of the Shah and the establishment of a democratic Iran. Her leadership qualities soon became evident, and she rose through the ranks to become co-leader of the MEK in 1985.
Leadership of the NCRI and International Advocacy
As president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Rajavi has been a staunch advocate for Iranian democracy, human rights, and secularism. Her diplomatic efforts include meetings with world leaders, prominent human rights advocates, and participation in international conferences to garner support for regime change in Iran.
