Marjan Sheikholeslami: From Parliamentary Candidate to “Queen of Corruption”
Transition to Conservative Politics and Business Sector
Following the rise of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government in the late 2000s, Sheikholeslami’s political stance moved closer to the Iranian right-wing and conservative factions. This shift coincided with her expanding involvement in Iran’s lucrative oil and gas sectors, where she established numerous companies and engaged in foreign trade.
Her business activities included founding companies in Iran and Turkey, such as “Aram” and “Deniz,” primarily involved in exporting and importing industrial and petrochemical goods. She became known as a key figure in facilitating trade contracts with Iran’s petrochemical complexes, often under controversial circumstances.
The Extensive Economic Empire and Capital Transfers Abroad
Sheikholeslami’s business empire expanded significantly through her ownership of multiple companies registered in Iran, Turkey, and Canada. She was reportedly involved in transferring substantial assets abroad—using mechanisms such as exporting industrial equipment and importing specialized goods—to sidestep international sanctions.
Her foreign ventures included the establishment of tourism and commercial companies, such as the “Mahur Parvaz” airline and various brands in Toronto. These activities, coupled with her capital transfers, drew media attention and suspicion about illicit wealth accumulation.
