The Life and Legacy of Seyyed Mohammad Tajzadeh: Brother of Mostafa Tajzadeh

Challenges, Repression, and Imprisonment

Government Restrictions and Political Repression

In March 2001, amidst allegations of election fraud during the 2000 legislative elections, Tajzadeh faced a clash with the Guardian Council, leading to a government work ban for three years. Despite this setback, he continued his activism, advocating for electoral integrity and civil rights.

Arrest and Imprisonment

The most significant chapter of his life unfolded in 2009 when he was arrested amid Iran’s widespread protests following the disputed presidential election. Amnesty International and other human rights organizations reported his detention, highlighting the repression faced by reformist activists.

He was convicted of “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the regime.” Sentenced to six years in prison and a ten-year ban on political and press activities, Tajzadeh endured harsh conditions in Evin Prison from 2009 until 2016.

While incarcerated, he faced additional charges, including a one-year sentence issued in 2014. His imprisonment made him a symbol of Iran’s ongoing struggle for civil liberties and reform.

Release and Continued Advocacy

In 2016, Tajzadeh was released, but restrictions on his political activities persisted. Despite these challenges, he remained an active voice in advocating for democracy, human rights, and reform.
