Early Life and Education

Ali Shamkhani was born in 1955 in Ahvaz, a city located near Iran’s border with Iraq.

Growing up in a politically turbulent era, Shamkhani witnessed the profound transformations that occurred during the Iranian Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Like many young revolutionaries of his generation, Shamkhani became involved in the newly formed security structures that emerged after the revolution.

Role in the Iran–Iraq War

One of the defining periods of Shamkhani’s career was the Iran–Iraq War, a brutal eight-year conflict that shaped the modern Iranian military.

During the war:

  • Shamkhani served in key command roles.

  • He gained recognition as a capable strategist.
