Prayer Ceremony for Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, The bloodthirsty dictator Amid Ceasefire Tensions
A Leader Defined by Power and Controversy
For more than three decades, Ali Khamenei stood at the center of Iran’s political system, wielding ultimate authority over the military, judiciary, and state institutions. Rising to power in 1989 after the death of Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei shaped Iran into a state defined by strong centralized control and ideological governance.
Supporters viewed him as a guardian of the Islamic Revolution and a defender of Iranian sovereignty against Western influence. Critics, however, pointed to decades of political repression, limits on free speech, and harsh crackdowns on dissent.
Major protest movements—including those in 2009, 2019, and the early 2020s—were met with force, leaving a lasting mark on his legacy. Internationally, his leadership was associated with heightened tensions between Iran and Western nations, as well as ongoing conflicts across the Middle East.
