Zeinab Pasha: From the Bread Riots to the Tobacco Movement
Zeinab Pasha, also spelled Zaynab Pasha, Zeynab Pasha, or Zainab Pasha, remains one of the most remarkable and least documented women in modern Iranian history. A fearless woman from Tabriz, she became associated with popular resistance during the late Qajar era, particularly the Tobacco Protest of Iran, the bread riots of Tabriz, and campaigns against grain hoarding, corruption, economic injustice and political oppression.
At a time when Iranian women were largely excluded from formal political institutions, Zeinab Pasha entered public life through the streets, bazaars and neighborhoods of Tabriz. She organized women, confronted merchants and officials, challenged hoarders, and reportedly led armed women who intervened when authorities attempted to reopen the Tabriz Bazaar during the Tobacco Movement.
Her story is important not simply because she participated in one of Iran’s most famous anti-concession movements, but because her activities demonstrate that Iranian women were active political and social actors decades before the Constitutional Revolution.
Zeinab Pasha’s name has consequently become associated with several important themes in Iranian history: women’s resistance, the Tobacco Protest, the Tabriz Bazaar, bread riots, economic justice, anti-corruption movements, popular protest, Qajar Iran and the early history of Iranian women’s political activism.
Yet her biography is surrounded by uncertainty.
Reliable information about her childhood, education, family life, exact birth date and final years is scarce. Even historians and later writers have disagreed about the dates of her birth and death. Accounts of her final journey to Karbala are also based partly on oral and secondary traditions rather than a complete contemporary biographical record.
That combination of historical importance and documentary silence has made Zeinab Pasha a fascinating figure.
She was remembered not as a politician with an official position, but as a woman who appeared when ordinary people were suffering and disappeared again before the authorities could easily capture her.
