Iraqi Kurds Prepare for War With Iran: Rising Tensions on the Middle East’s Most Volatile Border

Introduction

Tensions across the Middle East are rising rapidly as Kurdish militia fighters based in northern Iraq prepare for a potential confrontation with Iran. The development comes amid ongoing regional instability and increasing military pressure on Tehran following recent international strikes.

In the mountainous border regions near Erbil, members of the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan have begun mobilizing fighters, reinforcing bases, and conducting preparation drills. The organization, which operates within the broader Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan, says it is preparing for a possible opportunity to challenge Iranian control over Kurdish-majority areas inside Iran.

While global attention remains focused on the broader geopolitical confrontation involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, another potential conflict zone is emerging quietly along the Iraq–Iran border. Kurdish armed groups believe the shifting regional dynamics could create an opening for long-standing Kurdish independence aspirations.

For decades, Kurdish political movements across the Middle East have sought autonomy or independence in territories spanning Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey. Now, as regional tensions intensify, some Kurdish factions see the possibility of advancing their cause.
