13 Bedar in Tehran: Celebrating Life on the Frontline of War

The Meaning of 13 Bedar: More Than a Tradition

Sizdah Bedar, often translated as “Nature Day,” marks the conclusion of Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebration that begins on the spring equinox. Rooted in ancient Persian traditions, this day symbolizes renewal, harmony with nature, and the casting away of bad luck.

The number 13 is traditionally considered unlucky in Persian folklore. To counter this, families leave their homes and spend the entire day outdoors—parks, mountains, gardens, and riversides become vibrant spaces filled with laughter, music, and food.

But in Tehran, especially in times of conflict, this act takes on deeper meaning.

Going outside is no longer just about tradition—it becomes an act of quiet defiance.
